Jamaica’s Agricultural Sector Mounting Swift Recovery

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, says the agricultural sector is showing signs of a swift recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, with several short-term crops already returning to the market.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall on October 28, 2025, as a catastrophic Category Five storm, causing an estimated $30 billion in agricultural damage and impacting more than 70,000 farmers.

Canada Supports Jamaica’s Rural Women and Youth Farmers with Super Elite Potato Seeds

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining has partnered with the Government of Canada to support more than 500 rural women and youth farmers through the distribution of Chieftain Super Elite potato seeds and crop recovery technology packs. NFA ready to accept applications to fish for 2026 conch season

The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) is ready to accept applications for licences to fish for conch and the allocation of individual catch quotas for the 2026 conch fishing season.

Approximately 200 farmers and fisherfolk in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, received over $7 million in supplies and equipment on Tuesday (December 23) at the Breds Foundation Complex, as part of Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts.
