The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining in support of the Government of Jamaica’s (GOJ) efforts to foster an inclusive society, recently provided training in smart techniques in agriculture to members of the hearing-impaired community.

The 10 weeks practical training programme, dubbed the Climate Smart Agriculture Greenhouse Production training programme, was spearheaded by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) in collaboration with the Jamaica Red Cross and was held at the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf (CCCD) in Knockpatrick, Manchester.

Ministry of Agriculture Launches Project to Preserve Jamaica Hope Cattle

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining is announcing the commencement of an initiative aimed at safeguarding the Jamaica Hope Nucleus Herd (cattle) and enhancing its genetic potential.

In light of the pressing need to combat genetic erosion and promote the resilience of local cattle populations, the Ministry has embarked on this strategic project centered at the Bodles Research Station.

Over 140 Trained in Sustainable Fishing Practices, Eco-Tourism Advances

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining has announced the successful training of over 140 individuals, including youth and women, in comprehensive pelagic fishing across 7 targeted communities.

Minister Floyd Green made this announcement during the Ministry's Quarterly Press Briefing held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

This initiative which is a part of the "Promoting Community-based Climate Resilience in the Fisheries Sector" project, signifies a critical step towards fostering sustainable practices within Jamaica’s fishing communities.

500 acres of former sugar lands to be put into castor bean production

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining remains committed to the repurposing of former sugar lands into other agricultural ventures and have such recently allocated, through the Sugar Company of Jamaica Holding Limited (SCJ), 500 acres of such lands for castor bean production.

Fisherfolk to benefit from shorter time to renew fishing licence with new Fisheries Licensing and Registration System Project

Fishermen and fish farmers across the island will benefit from improved service delivery with the rollout of a Fisheries Licensing and Registration System Project that will enhance regulation and management.

The system, which will be executed through the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) along with the Transformation Implementation Unit (TIU), will shift from a completely manual process to a digitized one. This will enable fisherfolk to renew their licences from anywhere in Jamaica, eliminating the need to visit a physical location to submit an application.
