Jamaica First in Caribbean to Use Smart Trap Technology

Jamaica is the first Caribbean country to use Smart Traps in the surveillance and monitoring of insects that could impact local crops.

First installed in November last year, the acquisition of 125 Smart Traps was done through a partnership between the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) and the Plant Quarantine and Produce Inspection (PQPI) Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining.

So far, 95 per cent of the traps, which were sourced from Slovenia, have been installed.

Gov’t To Equip New and Renovated Cold Storage Facilities With Renewable Energy Capability

All cold-storage facilities to be built or renovated by the Government to extend the shelf life of agricultural produce will be operated using renewable energy, says Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green.

Seven Additional Irrigation Travellers Acquired for Bodles Agricultural Research Station

Seven additional irrigation travellers, valued approximately $35.37 million, have been acquired by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining for the Bodles Agricultural Research Station in St. Catherine.

These are expected to aid in significantly increasing the size of livestock pastures at the facility from 168 to 400 acres.

The five Type 100 R2/1A and two Type 100 R2/1B travellers, which were handed over on Wednesday (January 29), bring the number procured for the research station to 12.

Rehabilitated roads to benefit farmers in St. Ann

Smart Traps Installed at RADA Offices and Ports of Entry

More than 100 new smart traps have been installed at Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) offices and ports of entry across the island.

The traps, which are expected to enhance the surveillance and monitoring of pests, target the Tomato Leafminer and Medfly, which are not yet in Jamaica.
