Agriculture Minister Hails Case for Training Future Leaders of the Sector

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, has hailed the Portland-based College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) for its value in training future leaders of the sector.

On Wednesday, May 14, the Minister and his team hosted a ‘Think Tank’ at the institution, where he heard the students’ suggestions on how to improve the sector.

“You are the future leaders of our agriculture and fisheries space… . We genuinely believe that the best of the best in agriculture and fisheries come to CASE,” the Minister said.

More Than 650 Persons Trained Under Hot Pepper Value Chain Project

More than 650 stakeholders in the hot pepper producing sector have been trained under the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Hot Pepper Value Chain Project.

Valued at more than US$1 million and implemented in 2022, the Project aimed to enhance the competitiveness, sustainability, and international market access for Jamaican hot peppers.

This was done in three components, focused on strengthening technical capacity, implementing food safety systems, and supporting seed certification efforts.

Gov’t Adopts Bird Flu Safegards for Poultry Sector

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, through its Veterinary Services Division (VSD), has taken an exclusionary approach to safeguard the poultry sector against the threat of the Avian Influenza, commonly known as ‘Bird Flu’.

According to Portfolio Minister, Hon. Floyd Green, the highly contagious virus is often transmitted by migratory birds and can be introduced to poultry farms through contaminated feed, equipment, clothing or improperly declared imports.
