SCJ Holdings Tasked With Fast-tracking Land Divestments for Productive Economic Activities

Sugar Company of Jamaica (SCJ) Holdings Limited has been tasked with urgently fast-tracking its divestment process to repurpose former sugar lands for productive economic activities.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, said 6,338 acres of land were leased across St. Catherine, Clarendon, St. Thomas, Trelawny and Westmoreland in 2024 for a variety of purposes.

These included cash-crop farming, horticulture/greenhouse, aquaculture/fish farming, livestock rearing and grass cultivation.

To date, SCJ has leased a total of approximately 84,279...

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining will be investing more than $60 million to procure agricultural drones with spraying, seeding and surveillance capabilities.

Gov’t Moves to Establish Pension Scheme for Farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining plans to establish a pension scheme for farmers.

Portfolio Minister, Hon. Floyd Green, announced that the Ministry will advocate for $1 billion to seed the fund.

“Unfortunately, some farmers just keep going, even though they are not so strong, because they are afraid [that] if they stop, they don’t have anything to fall back on. I am pleased to announce that the Ministry has started the process of designing a farmers’ pension scheme,” he stated.
